Rice University is looking for an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach in Houston, TX



The assistant coach, strength and conditioning will develop and implement individualized conditioning, strength-power and flexibility program for the football program and other assigned varsity sports as determined by the head strength and conditioning coach. S/he will develop and monitor speed and conditioning programs of athletic teams including scheduling testing, workout, programming, etc., and maintain a positive attitude and working relationships among the strength and conditioning staff. The assistant coach, strength and conditioning position also develops a working knowledge of all equipment in the facility, acquire technical expertise in all facets of our program: lifting, flexibility, conditioning, nutrition, and keep weight room clean and organized at all times. S/he is also responsible for supervising and training assistants and interns along with maintaining all equipment and reporting any damaged equipment.

The ideal candidate will have experience in training collegiate or professional athletes, specifically football players. Ideal candidate should also have experience developing specialized training and nutrition plans for athletes.

Essential Functions

  • Develops strength and conditioning programs for the football program and other assigned athletic teams
  • Schedules, tests, and directs workouts of student athletes in non-revenue programs
  • Works with head coach of assigned sports to ensure workout plan meets the needs of each athlete and will contribute to their playing success
  • Maintains positive attitude and working relationship among the strength and conditioning staff
  • Serves as an expert in the use of all equipment in the facility and for all facets of the strength and conditioning program which includes lifting, flexibility, conditioning, and nutrition
  • Keeps weight room clean and organized at all times
  • Conducts should always be professional
  • Keeps fitness center staffed at all times during hours of operation
  • Fulfills all responsibilities required to maintain the weight room in the absence of the head strength and conditioning coach
  • Reports all equipment and weight room damage to the proper person
  • Properly maintains the equipment

Additional Functions / Information

  • Must be willing to travel with football team to away contests
  • Must be willing to work mornings, nights, and/or weekends as team schedule requires

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • 1 year of experience in strength and conditioning coaching or working as a sports coach
  • Must possess (or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license with no more than three moving violations and/or at fault accidents within the past 36 months, and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years
  • Required to have/obtain within 30 days of hire CPR and AED Certification
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS); USAW Club Coach certificate; Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) or willing to take the next available certification exam.

Skills Required

  • Demonstrated success in skill instruction and practice/game plan development
  • Knowledge of NCAA legislation and participating conference bylaws, and compliance guidelines related to a sports program
  • Able to motivate athletes to perform at peak ability
  • Demonstrated good sportsmanship and ethical behavior
  • Highly organized, good time management, and sound judgment
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in a diverse community
  • Demonstrated professional and effective public relations skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to multi-task and work well in a team setting or individual setting
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment
  • Adaptable and supportive of a changing work environment
  • Creative and forward thinking


  • Master’s degree in physical education, health, or related field
  • Experience working in college athletics
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics rules/regulations
